  • School Improvement Plan

St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School

What is the school doing to improve outcomes for our children?

A Parents’ Guide to our School Improvement Plan 2026/2027

Our school’s performance is assessed under the following headings:

    • RE, Prayer and Liturgy and the Catholic Life and Mission of the School
    • Quality of Education
    • Behaviour, Attitudes and Attendance
    • Personal Development
    • Leadership and Management
    • Early Years

We constantly evaluate how well we are doing in these areas and collect evidence from all stakeholders. We gather information through our monitoring and evaluation, questionnaires and review our SDP at several points throughout the year. The governors are responsible for agreeing to the priorities and ensuring that each plan is implemented.

    What are our priorities?

    School Development Plan Summary: 2026 – 2027

Our School Development Plan (SDP) outlines the key priorities and strategic targets for St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School (part of the Our Lady and All Saints Catholic Multi Academy Company). Guided by our diocesan mission—“Forming Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, with kind hearts, questioning minds and thirst for knowledge and a hunger for justice”—this summary outlines our core commitments to our pupils, families, and community.

⛪ 1. Catholic Life, Religious Education & Collective Worship

    • Catholic Life & Mission: Embed our new diocesan mission across all stakeholder groups through visible RE Knowledge Walls, entrance displays, and strengthened parish links for sacramental preparation.
    • Inclusive Curriculum: Review curriculum frameworks to fully embed Catholic Social Teaching and 'Building the Kingdom' principles.
    • Religious Education (RE): Implement the 'Discerning Disciples' curriculum model, narrow attainment gaps for SEND and disadvantaged groups using targeted interventions, and set up a consistent classroom RE Knowledge Wall framework.
    • Prayer & Liturgy: Fully apply the recommendations of the new Prayer and Liturgy Directory, enrich pupil-led prayer sessions, and refresh our hymn portfolio to balance traditional and modern celebrations.

    🎓 2. Quality of Education

    • Oracy & Communication: Implement a school-wide development focus on Oracy, Language, and Effective Communication to support inclusive classroom talk and high-quality pupil voice.
    • Reading & Literacy: Aim for 90% of pupils to achieve a reading age in line with their chronological age via the Accelerated Reader scheme.
    • Writing & GPS: Embed 'The Writing Framework' (separating oral composition from transcription). Target 80% or more of pupils to meet or exceed age-related expectations in Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling (GPS) utilizing the Emile program and Standard English modeling.
    • Mathematics: Adapt the curriculum to balance written calculations, reduce worksheets, introduce real-world maths investigations, and build number fluency across all key stages.
    • Inclusion Strategy: Establish a comprehensive inclusion framework and audit classroom/corridor environments to optimize sensory load and accessibility.

    🤝 3. Behaviour, Attitudes & Attendance

    • Behaviour Regulation: Launch a revised, simple visual flowchart based on trauma-informed practice, self-regulation tools (e.g., calm corners), and consistent restorative routines.
    • Attendance Excellence: Work to achieve the Inclusive Attendance Bronze Award, targeting an overall attendance rate above 95% and reducing persistent absence below 10%, particularly among vulnerable groups.

    🌱 4. Personal Development

    • Enrichment Passport: Ensure every child engages with all 5 areas of the Enrichment Benchmarks Framework (Civic Engagement; Nature & Outdoors; Arts & Culture; Sport; and Wider Life Skills).
    • Mission Weeks: Host three dedicated theme weeks across the year: Loving Week, Living Week, and Learning Week.

    💼 5. Leadership & Management

    • Academic Standards: Set highly ambitious targets for external outcomes in reading, writing, SPAG, and maths while reviewing homework policies.
    • Staff Coaching: Introduce a robust system of peer coaching following diocesan priorities.
    • Governance: Maximise local governing body (LGB) scrutiny and challenge through dedicated 'LGB Days' and alignment with the Diocesan Flourishing Framework.

🧸 6. Early Years Provision (EYFS)

    • Foundational Layouts: Focus on physical development foundations for writing (gross and fine motor pivots), handwriting structures, and robust phonics teaching.
    • Speech & Language: Prioritise communication closes using the shREC framework, Wellcomm screening, and explicit Tier 2 vocabulary depth.
    • Complex Needs & Outdoors: Deliver targeted CPD for complex social/communication needs and establish daily, purposeful free-flow learning in our newly developed outdoor area.
